Marco Piras

Marco Piras was born in Ivrea (TO) on 6/12/1977, he is married with two kids and lives in Turin. He graduated in Civil Engineering at the Politecnico di Torino in 2002 with a thesis entitled “Measurements for the control of GPS deformations in real time.” He has received his Ph.D. with honors in “Geodesy and Geomatics” at the Politecnico di Milano in 2006, spending a part of his research activity (11 months) at the ETHZ in Zurich. From 2006 to 2012 he worked as a Research Fellow at the Politecnico di Torino and since 2016 he is associate professor on the same university. Since 2005, he is lecturer at the Politecnico di Torino, on bachelor and master of science classes, teaching on Geomatics domain. His research activity is mainly focused on GNSS satellite positioning techniques and NRTK networks, sensor integration and development of innovative solutions for navigation, indoor navigation and low-cost UAVs. Since 2005 he has constantly participated in working groups in national and international projects.
He has been principal investigator in different regional research project and project partner in the FP7 and Alpine space programs , as well as several commercial collaboration contracts. He is author of over than 110 papers, considering journals, proceedings of national and international conferences and book chapters. Since 2003 he has participated in numerous national and international conferences, both as a speaker and chairman. In 2006 the PhD thesis has received an “mention” by AUTEC and in 2009 won the “L. FERRETTI” awards as the best young researcher in the ICAR06 discipline (Topography and Cartography). He is secretary of the Italian Society of photogrammetry and Topography (SIFET) and he is member of different ISPRS working groups.
